When given details on Louis L’Amour’s Lost Treasures: Volume 1 by Louis L’Amour with Beau L’Amour I was both skeptical and excited about trying this completely new genre by this new to me author(s). But for the simple fact that I have always been fascinated and interested in Louis L’Amour’s writing – mostly because I’ve seen his books whenever I’m shopping for something new – I chose to dive in and give it a chance. Boy, was I glad I took the chance because it was a serious privilege to dive into the mind of this timeless author and learn about the craft in which he used to construct his stories and characters.
As I was reading the introduction and through some of the unfinished stories from almost all genres I could really tell the heart behind this collection. Louis’ son, Beau, captured the essence of his father and crafted this 500+ page book with the mind of his father and his admiration towards him in one go. This collection is simply magical.
Reading some of the unfinished stories I felt like I was transported back into time and feeling like a voyeur, getting a glimpse into what the characters saw and felt. Louis L’Amour’s writing is so detailed and clear cut that I got lost in what he was writing and the picture he was painting. My favorite out of the unfinished manuscripts would have to be Trail of Tears, my life literally paused as I was reading it it was so good.
I can’t say that now that I’ve read Louis L’Amour’s Lost Treasure: Volume 1 that I’m now going to binge all of his stories, because his books would never be something I would buy for myself. Despite that though, I appreciate the experience and whenever my tastes in books change towards westerns of his caliber he will most definitely be the author I go to first.
